Salt & Still is a New York based textile design studio founded by Alison Charli Smith. All the stitching on Salt & Still's pieces is done by hand in the studio using 100% cotton sashiko thread. Sashiko thread is very durable and has a matte finish, unlike regular embroidery thread. All stitched patterns are created with the very basic running stitch. Hand stitching is laborious and time consuming but meditative in its process.
Ali used a blend of traditional sashiko motifs and classic quilt patterns as areas of inspiration. Interested in the idea of pattern as a bridge between cultures, one pattern used is both a very old sashiko motif called seven treasures and a traditional American quilt motif known as the orange peel pattern. On another jacket Ali stitched a traditional lone star quilt pattern as a symbol of Texas pride.
